Our Journal
We paid homage to the Western Cape’s rich design history through our reinterpretation of the classic Tulbagh Chair.
After turning out several prototypes in our Maitland factory, we decided that a trip to Tulbagh was in order – what better way to acquaint ourselves with this significant piece of South African furniture history than to visit its namesake?
With padkos, cameras and curious spirits in tow, our team hit the road and explored museums, warehouses and antique stores as they acquainted themselves with the streets of Tulbagh. Soaking in the rich history of the town, the designers found inspiration in unexpected places like the workshop of master craftsman Francois Smuts along the way.
Dive into this story to read more about the inspiration our design team gleaned as they explored the region and for some insight into the technical resolutions that allowed us to bring our first all-timber chair to life.
Dive into our latest journal piece which features an inspiring interview with the talented duo behind Cedar Coffee Roasters, Winston Thomas and Leigh Wentzel.
With close to 20 years of combined experience, Winston and Leigh have a wealth of experience that they are using to grow Cedar and bring speciality coffee to more South Africans.
We explore how Cedar was started, what keeps them pushing through the challenges of running their own business and the lessons they've learned along the way. The piece also explores how they intentionally build community and why it's important for them to pay it forward as they grow.
The Art of Collaboration: A Look Inside Design Week Challenge 2023
November 17, 2023Design Week Challenge is an embodiment of three core values: the discipline of creativity, transparency, and the mandate to champion design in South Africa. It is also a yearly reminder that we are not held ransom by our schedules, creative blocks, pressure or fear of failure.
The challenge involves an intense five-day process of brainstorming, prototyping and crafting a brand-new product that is ready to launch on our online store come Friday afternoon.
This year, we struck out for new horizons and invited a group of multidisciplinary designers from around South Africa to join us.
Read this piece to learn more about the challenge and how collaborating with Yoco, K-Way, The MAAK and Bopa Mmuso for this year's DWC produced a new folding beach chair and a portable beach side table.
