Behind the ‘Rahmah-Rama’ Shelf
April 14, 2025

The design team here at Pedersen + Lennard collaborated with architects at The MAAK and the Otto Foundation to create a unique collection of modular bookshelves called ‘Rahmah-Rama’.
These playful forms made from folded steel and ‘infinite board’ – made from recycled plastic with a playful, confetti-like appearance – were designed to fit, stack and be reassembled to suit a variety of shapes and user needs.
The bookshelf silhouettes were designed with the help of school learners from Rahmaniyeh Primary School in District Six, Cape Town as part of a facilitated workshop during the fit out process of their new school library, named the Rahmah Library.
The workshop, conducted with the Otto Foundation, invited the learners to imagine their dream bookshelves and how they wanted the books of their new library to be stored and displayed. The bespoke furniture pieces have since been installed in the Library and are now ready to play a role in improving literacy and fostering a love of reading.
“The learner-engagement, in this project, unearthed valuable creative inputs, offering fresh perspectives that have led to a more meaningful design. The unique process of designing with children celebrates their creativity and empowers them to see themselves as active contributors to the world around them. The Rahmah-Rama bookshelves are a joyful example of this, ” says Xanelé Mennen, Otto Foundation and child-centered placemaker.
Modern, modular, and made for today’s class of learners, the Rahmah-Rama bookshelves in Sage and Vintage Green, Powder Blue and Lemon Yellow, bring signature P+L steel colours to an environment that fosters long-term learning. To enter the Rahmah Library is to walk into a treasure trove of inspiration, where learners are encouraged to seek inspiration often hidden in plain sight - or rather as seen through the pages of their yet-to-be discovered favourite library book.
“We love supporting the Otto foundations' mission and getting to work alongside the kids designing within the vibrant District Six community was just such a lovely opportunity!” says Luke Pedersen, co-founder.
