Our Sustainability

our approach

Considered design isn’t just a phrase to us, it’s a principle that we try to incorporate into everything we do. While we’ve by no means ‘arrived’, we do our utmost to create responsibly and better the lives of those that have had a hand in making every Pedersen + Lennard piece.

Sustainability is built-in, not bolted on

As the poet Wendell Berry once said,

We do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

We hold firm on our belief that it’s possible to build a profitable business whilst still cherishing sustainability.

For us, sustainability is built-in, not bolted on.

Almost every business talks about being eco-friendly, but beyond the ‘green-washing’ and labels, we believe that longevity and sustainablity are two sides of the same coin. That is why we invest a lot of our energy and resources into making pieces that arent just 'eco-certified', but built to last many lifetimes.

Good design always adds value

We want our pieces to last a lifetime, and to hold your attention for that long too.

That’s why we aim to create design focused furniture with a timeless aesthetic and great attention to detail. With a hope that each Pedersen + Lennard piece will be cherished and passed down from one generation to the next.

Our approach to production

Leaving a lighter footprint, maintaining a sustainable business and prizing the longevity of our pieces demands a lot of learning, relearning and unlearning. It’s not a box one can tick once and then forget about – and it certainly rises and falls in the production department.

We’re constantly investing in our production, from the machinery we buy to the kinds of bristles and bolts we use. Our goal is always to ensure our pieces are not only sustainable, but enduring too.

To this end, every material we use is locally and sustainably sourced from a network of suppliers we know and trust. We use non-toxic sealants and timber that’s FSC-certified from sustainably managed forests. And in an effort to reduce any excess waste, many of our designs have been inspired by using the “by-product" or "off-cut” materials of other designs - turning every part into something beautiful and functional.

In short, our approach to sustainability is best understood holistically. We're taking the long view when it comes to quality, long-term relevance and staff development.

Now, it’s your turn

The time we put into making each of our pieces is surpassed only by the time you get to enjoy them. In order to ensure your furniture stays as timeless as its design, we’ve put together a simple guide to caring for your Pedersen + Lennard piece.
